Suggested IRL Solve
Hello and happy friday TSA folks! Posting another suggestion for a cold case worth investigating. Let's hope this one tickles your fancy this time ;) And hey - with cases slowing down and the UK opening up travel, perhaps this one could be our first in-person solve???
Now to the case. We've brought it up in the monthly chat thread before - you'll recall Millhaven, that little British town with a really high body count. The Millhaven Massacre, as it was called back in the day, was this really hinky creepy mass murder with a whole bunch of dismembered bodies in a small northern town in the UK that they never really solved. It just sort of... slipped under the radar. Which is wild, considering the press coverage and what actually happened. First it was a lone perp, then it was a mass suicide; for a brief period they even entertained that they were satanists. The last thing I heard was some expert had settled on mass hysteria caused by a gas leak, and then everyone moved on.
Except me, I guess. Even today I can't stop thinking about it, and it blew my tiny mind when it happened. All the kids at school would tell us scary stories about how the Millhaven Man would chop off all our legs and arms if we didn't do our homework on time. Rather than getting scared, however, I could not get enough of it... I was a morbid little kid. This was long before us here at Truth Seekers Anonymous, but istg my obsession with solving puzzles started that day...
Anyway, I'm watching Dexter and he's talking about cutting up bodies and it comes to me, suddenly, that I never knew what really happened in Millhaven. I'd even received a tip, recently - some raving lunatic talking about rabbits and wormholes and third dimensions - but he'd mentioned Millhaven by name, among a whole other bunch of locations and all sorts of crazy... anyway, it's not really important. What's important is this weirdo had jogged my memory and I was watching TV and suddenly remembering Millhaven when it hit me - that I never knew if they'd caught anyone - and now I had the means to figure out what actually happened there.
How, you ask? Now; without totally blowing my cover and revealing what I work with... let's just say I have a way to legally access certain files that regular members of the public can't. I'm not talking about the Charley project, internet type stuff, but the real stuff. And boy, does this case have all sorts of weird goings-on associated with it. Goes without saying that I should not be posting this here as it breaks all sorts of data security regulations and I'd be in sixty shades of shit if I got found out... sooooo I'd appreciate it if this stays here and wasn't linked onward to the wider net. There's a reason you hand over your IP when you log in here, people, you know the drill. Here's the links, obvious warning for NSFW:
Coroner's report
Toxicology report
SO. First thing that grabs my eye - apparently they kept this thing in the family, and not the Manson type of family either! The official death certificates (link here for the lazy) list almost all of our vics as Jane / John Does - but the coroner's report reveals a very different story. We've got an entire lineage of freaks going four stages back! Great-Grandad, Grandad, Grandma, Mum, Dad - and finally the son. Imagine being that young and around this stuff.
We also get names for some of the younger Janes, who (predictably / sadly) are not family members. Guessing they were lured there and I imagine did not participate in this willingly (check the ETOD - they all went first) We should definitely reference their deaths against any active misper investigations over on the Charley project, Facebook etc.
What freaks me out the most here? The quite frankly galactic difference between the coroner's report and what's in the official records. Now I can understand, in a sensational event like this, the desire not to go into too much detail. The chance of copycat murders in these types of cases is high; families of the victims will access this document; the press don't need more sensationalist info yadda yadda. And not to mention there's a survivor walking around out there. But... natural causes? Really??!?! The coroner says the cut about bits were so badly “distended and warped” that she might as well have been looking at a monster!!! These people were diced and sliced so badly that they struggled to decide whose legs belonged to who (!) If that's a natural cause, I really don't want to see an unnatural one.
Also? I did some *really* intense Facebook / Google / Reddit scouring and beyond the initial reports there's no records on the son anywhere. And I really do mean anywhere. I know with a case as high profile as this, they would have definitely changed his name, but... that kid had to go somewhere, right?! And I know I'll get flamed for saying this and maybe it's just my work self chiming in but.., he definitely should be... I don't know. On a list somewhere? Call me heartless, but you don't escape this sort of thing and then just... live a happy life.
With all the high strangeness of this case, I definitely propose that this be the first in person meetup for us all!
Burning the midnight oil, L? You really should let me take you out on that date ;) Anyway, did a little research into this (I have my ways) and dug up this article in the press archives. Seems to line up with your coroner's report, no? The young police officer also mentions they were all wearing the same stuff. Leans some weight to that cult angle...
NO SHIT. Good find.
Still no mention of the kid. With all the media attention on this case, you really would have thought they'd be at pains to say he'd been taken into care.
Wonder where he is now. Would make one hell of an interview...
Imagine if we could find him. Dread to think...
No paparazzi.
@Wh1terabbit ???
@Snapitlikeitshot Ignore it. Just some troll trying to freak us out. Pulling the same shit in a thread further down.
Grim. Certs seem legit, ur thoughts @PicadillyPicasso?
It's either real or a real good fake. At a certain point it gets hard to tell.
because you'd know...
The way it's written... fakes usually give themselves away with the level of enthusiasm. This really sounds like it's written by an overworked coroner who'd rather be anywhere else. So I'm inclined to believe it's real. Which is... worrying.
Right?
What were the other locations the tipster mentioned along with Millhaven? What's the connection between them? Odd to just receive something like this, L. Especially considering you not only grew up near the area where it all went down (I'm assuming) but you just so happen to be the moderator of a dark web cold case forum to boot... Sounds like bait to me. I don't like it.
Nah. You know me, I love coincidences and I DIG a conspiracy theory - but I'm willing to bet this was just some oddball with too much time on his hands, honestly. He sounded many things but sane was NOT one of them. You get them all the time in this line of work.
Still. The locations?
It was some time ago now... but I think some or other forest near Suffolk, a lumber mill in the Midwest US and an island near the arctic circle that had a name that sounded like someone had sneezed... As for the connection, no idea, honestly. I know I did a search at the time, but no dice.
You'll discover soon enough.
@Wh1terabbit Mate, contribute or GTFO.
@L_awfulthrowaway Can we ban this guy?
Agreed, he's just trolling and I usually ignore it but there's some sensitive material here. I know I didn't let him in. @DUHASTMILK got your banhammer?
As soon as I find out how he got access, I'm banning him. I don't remember approving this one.
Me either
That toxicology report is strange to me. It's very unusual to not note down the component parts of an unknown chemical compound. Half of the victims were injected with it, too. The coroner's report mentions some of the bodies seemed 'mutated'. Sounds a bit far-fetched to be honest, but perhaps it could be chalked up to this serum?
This is totally unrelated to your sciencey comment but I've been in the library for four hours straight trying to do my dissertation and these reports have got me SO SPOOKED. Injections? Mutations?! My jaw is ON the FLOOR. Your flair says you're involved with healthcare... please tell me these reports are some fancy stunt otherwise I will NOT be able to sleep tonight?!
Unfortunately for you, this report looks real to me. I guess you'll finish your essay tonight.
*SHUDDER* I am not leaving campus EVER again.
'Blowing your cover' / 'legally access' ? Say you're a police officer without saying you're a police officer...
Also? It's pretty easy for the great unwashed to get those files. If you know, you know
@Linuxnlouie Rule 3, Doxxing and Identity Protection. You've been warned. Again...
Who's for our first in-person solve?
ROAD TRIP!
Game.
Let's do this!
If you're coming @L_awfulthrowaway I guess I can't say no...
Hell. Yes
I'll see you there...
@Wh1teRabbit As IF some 30 minute old account is coming on an in-person solve... dream on, weirdo.
You look so cute when you sleep.
@Linuxnlouie @L_awfulthrowaway Don't feed the troll
@ALL Based on the trolling and sensitive nature of the documents, I'm locking this thread now. Meet-up info for all parties interested coming via DM. See you in Millhaven, everyone. It looks like it'll be one to remember.
